Transition to LinkedIn Learning

Lynda.com's parent company LinkedIn is absorbing the content into a new platform called LinkedIn Learning. The library version, LinkedIn Learning for Library, will not be integrated with other LinkedIn features, and therefore will not require users to have a LinkedIn account. Ohio libraries will migrate to the new platform the first week in May; see this spreadsheet for the planned date.

What Patrons Will See

  • Starting in March or April, lyndaLibrary users will see a banner announcement (example png) telling them their upgrade has been scheduled for a particular date, and directing them to this FAQ to learn more.
  • On rare occasions, a patron may see a message (example) saying their account will be cancelled. If that happens, please get some details (library card number, email address) and report it to OPLIN support.
  • Unlike Lynda.com, LinkedIn Learning for Library stores no personally identifiable information (PII): no names, no email addresses—only the library card number used to create the account. Patrons are advised to download certificates of completion before their Lynda accounts are migrated, because names will be removed during the transition.

Certificates can be found in the user menu located at the top right of the Lynda.com page. Patrons will select a certificate, enter their name, and the certificate will be generated to print or save as a PDF.

  • On the date of migration, neither Lynda.com nor LinkedIn Learning will be available for patrons. Migration begins at about 9:00 a.m., and takes two-three hours to complete. Find your library's planned migration date on this spreadsheet
    • UPDATE MAY 5: We've seen migrations not begin until the afternoon, and last several hours. After migration, your library's Lynda portal will redirect to https://www.lynda.com/upgrade/completed, and the "Get Started" button will send users to your new LinkedIn Learning login page.
  • After migration, patrons use a new URL to access LinkedIn Learning. They will see a screen to enter their library card number and PIN, then proceed through a short on-boarding process to select topics of interest and optionally set weekly learning goals.
  • After migration, when a patron tries to use the old Lynda.com URL, they will be directed to the new login page at LinkedIn Learning.

Getting the Word Out

Information for patrons about the change will be added to the Ohio Web Library site. Libraries are encouraged to put notices about the transition on their own websites wherever their patrons find the current Lynda.com link. Starting in late March, Lynda users will see a banner notification after logging in.

Some libraries may want to email their Lynda.com patrons directly. To get a list of your Lynda users, email support@oplin.ohio.gov. (Email must come from a library's email domain.)

When advising patrons about the change, suggest that they download and store copies of their existing certificates. Certificates can be accessed from the user menu located at the top right of the Lynda.com page. Sample message (docx).

Librarian FAQs

What is the new URL for LinkedIn Learning?
As with Lynda.com, each library will have its own custom link. Your library's new link should be https://www.linkedin.com/learning-login/go/oh####. ("oh####" will be your library's FSCS number.)
 
Important: The new link will be functional a few weeks before migration, but it's important you do not advertise your new link until after migration is complete. Any patron who logs into LinkedIn Learning before migration will create a new account, and their Lynda account history will not transfer.
 
Are there training materials available to help us guide patrons through the new product?
As training materials become available, we will link them here.
 
Are there MARC records we can load into our catalog?
Some libraries loaded Lynda.com MARC records into their local catalogs. Libraries should remove those by the end of April. Contact director@oplin.ohio.gov to request the new MARC records.
 
Does LinkedIn store the library card number and PIN?
LinkedIn will encrypt and store the library card number for abuse prevention. PINs are not stored.
 
Will all the stats and information from Lynda Admin transfer over to LinkedIn Learning?
Not all of it. After the change, libraries will no longer have access to some user learning activity (such as certificates earned) or personally identifiable information (such as email addresses). You will have access to basic use metrics: number of users, number of videos, etc. OPLIN has collected these basic usage statistics for all libraries since July 2019; you can access them at https://stats.oplin.org/lynda.
 
OPLIN pulls the Lynda stats via a vendor-provided API. LinkedIn Learning has not finished developing the API for LinkedIn Learning stats, so we expect a few months delay before numbers will be available.
 
Note: to manage the platform migration, OPLIN now controls the Lynda Admin accounts for all Ohio libraries. Once migration is complete, libraries can be provided with direct access to statistics on the LinkedIn Learning platform.
 
I have concerns about the privacy of patron information that is to be shared with LinkedIn.
Online privacy is important, and it is good for librarians to inform themselves and to help educate their patrons. LinkedIn delayed their launch of LinkedIn Learning for Library so they could address librarians' concerns. The new platform collects no personally identifiable information (PII). More information about LinkedIn's privacy policies and tools is at https://privacy.linkedin.com. A specific policy for LinkedIn Learning for Library is forthcoming.
